Can They Really See You?

What we send in on paper to an employer and what we present in person are two completely different animals.  We may be great at interviewing, but it is the paper gets us in the door.  What we do from there only helps the employer determine whether or not what looks good on paper will actually look good sitting in their office.

In many cases, a real person may not even get the first look at your resume.  Employers who take in high volumes of applications and resumes sometimes use software to scan resumes for certain keywords.  The resumes that make it through the scanning process might then be passed on to an actual human who may or may not fully understand your experience as it is stated on your resume.  For this reason, it is important to present your information in the most easily understood language possible.

In addition to clear language, there are also things that should not be included on your resume.  An article in US News & World Report explains that there may be some things on your resume that are making you look “old.”  The author, Emily Brandon, states that details such as including your high school graduation date, a long work history, failure to emphasize computer skills, and even the format of your resume can lead employers to think that your experience and education haven’t kept up with the times.  While this isn’t necessarily true and is definitely an unfair assessment for individuals who have been in the workforce for over ten years, the ability to show that you are current on your skills and that you can communicate this to hiring managers who may have just entered the workforce is critical to your success in getting the interview and ultimately, the job.

We live in a society that often discounts the value of a solid foundation; whether in our skill set or in other areas of our lives.  In principle, this shouldn’t be tolerated but the sad fact is that the value of foundation will likely not be recognized until the workforce can somehow monetarily quantify the damage that has occurred due to a lack of a good one.  So, while we wait for experience to become fashionable again, our best course of action is to paint a better picture with the brushes that we possess.  BHG Consulting can help you present your skills in a more attractive way.  We have several different templates available.  We are highly skilled at putting the right spin on your story so that employers will be more likely to put your resume in the “yes” pile.

If you need help, please get in touch with us and try one of our resume packages.  We can create several different resumes for you depending on which skills you need to highlight for a particular position.  We offer customized cover letters as well.  All of this can be created for you within about 48 hours from the time we receive your order and your information.  Get in touch today and let us help you get yourself out there!

Knowing your strengths

Knowing your strengths helps you to make good business decisions. For the job seeker, it also helps you to know when it is appropriate to throw your hat in the ring and it helps you to sell yourself as the best candidate for the job should you be fortunate enough to be selected for a face-to-face interview.

An article on Monster.com details how to assess your weaknesses and your strengths as a job seeker. List of strengths and weaknesses: What to say in your interview by Carole Martin gives a short list of strengths that you can discuss during your face-to-face interviews. She explains that you need to be prepared so that you don’t experience interview paralysis.

Some examples of strengths you might mention include:

· Enthusiasm

· Trustworthiness

· Creativity

· Discipline

· Patience

· Respectfulness

· Determination

· Dedication

· Honesty

· Versatility

Of course there are other strengths that it might be appropriate to mention depending on the position for which you are being interviewed. These, however, are a great place to start.

In our next post, we’ll talk about the difference between presenting our qualifications on paper and in person. Subscribe to our page so that you’ll know when the article is posted.

Who Actually Sees Your Resume?

Depending on the size and type of organization to which you are applying, human hands may never actually touch your resume.  Many businesses use software which scans the document for certain keywords related to the job openings that they have posted and if your resume doesn't contain those key terms, it will be automatically marked as disqualified.  Even if you have all the right skills, if you haven't presented it in terms that those programs can "understand," the HR department may never lay eyes on your resume.

This is the biggest reason why BHG Consulting does not encourage the use of fancy layouts and fonts to present your qualifications to potential employers.  It is always best to focus on stating your qualifications as clearly and succinctly as possible in order to ensure that you get past the first layer of reviews.  We believe that a clean, well-stated resume is 100 times better than one that is showy and filled with what amounts to our own opinion of what we can do.  State your case simply, plainly, without seeking to send the employer off on a wild goose chase to find your skill set on the document.

Our advice to you is that before you spend hundreds of dollars to have a larger firm "fancy up" your resume, call BHG and let us help you put together a resume that accurately depicts your skills and abilities and is designed with an eye toward getting past the resume screening programs and into the hands of an actual interviewer.  Once you have your resume, we can also help with interview prep and job search.  Take a look at our list of services and get in touch with BHG today!

Is your resume giving employers the wrong impression?

With over fifteen years of experience in Human Resource Management, I've seen my fair share of resumes that do little to nothing to highlight the applicant's skills.  An article by Samantha Lee of Business Insider spells out some of the most annoying things that one recruiting professional found in the resumes she's reviewed over the years.  I'm including a link to the article here:
