Can They Really See You?

What we send in on paper to an employer and what we present in person are two completely different animals.  We may be great at interviewing, but it is the paper gets us in the door.  What we do from there only helps the employer determine whether or not what looks good on paper will actually look good sitting in their office. 

In many cases, a real person may not even get the first look at your resume.  Employers who take in high volumes of applications and resumes sometimes use software to scan resumes for certain keywords.  The resumes that make it through the scanning process might then be passed on to an actual human who may or may not fully understand your experience as it is stated on your resume.  For this reason, it is important to present your information in the most easily understood language possible. 

In addition to clear language, there are also things that should not be included on your resume.  An article in US News & World Report explains that there may be some things on your resume that are making you look “old.”  The author, Emily Brandon, states that details such as including your high school graduation date, a long work history, failure to emphasize computer skills, and even the format of your resume can lead employers to think that your experience and education haven’t kept up with the times.  While this isn’t necessarily true and is definitely an unfair assessment for individuals who have been in the workforce for over ten years, the ability to show that you are current on your skills and that you can communicate this to hiring managers who may have just entered the workforce is critical to your success in getting the interview and ultimately, the job. 

We live in a society that often discounts the value of a solid foundation; whether in our skill set or in other areas of our lives.  In principle, this shouldn’t be tolerated but the sad fact is that the value of foundation will likely not be recognized until the workforce can somehow monetarily quantify the damage that has occurred due to a lack of a good one.  So, while we wait for experience to become fashionable again, our best course of action is to paint a better picture with the brushes that we possess.  BHG Consulting can help you present your skills in a more attractive way.  We have several different templates available.  We are highly skilled at putting the right spin on your story so that employers will be more likely to put your resume in the “yes” pile.

Knowing your strengths

Knowing your strengths helps you to make good business decisions. For the job seeker, it also helps you to know when it is appropriate to throw your hat in the ring and it helps you to sell yourself as the best candidate for the job should you be fortunate enough to be selected for a face-to-face interview.

An article on Monster.com details how to assess your weaknesses and your strengths as a job seeker. List of strengths and weaknesses: What to say in your interview by Carole Martin gives a short list of strengths that you can discuss during your face-to-face interviews. She explains that you need to be prepared so that you don’t experience interview paralysis. 

Some examples of strengths you might mention include:

· Enthusiasm

· Trustworthiness

· Creativity

· Discipline

· Patience

· Respectfulness

· Determination

· Dedication

· Honesty

· Versatility

Of course there are other strengths that it might be appropriate to mention depending on the position for which you are being interviewed. These, however, are a great place to start.
